VOLindia was conceptualised by Tushita Ranchan, inspired by National Service Programs like AmeriCorps.
The idea was then incubated by the Volindia team in Social Entrepreneurship Collaboratory, 2007 at Harvard University.
Moving out of the academic setting, VOLindia has now been given an identity in India.
VOLindia Foundation is registered as a public charitable trust in New Delhi, India.
"Growing up in India, I was inured to the problems of inequity around me. When I started living abroad, I was struck by the willingness of many young people to volunteer time for social causes. I wish I had done something when I was in college and that there was someone like VOLindia offering me the opportunity to serve. In a country where half a billion people are under the age of 25, the idea of thousands of Indian taking initiative in solving problems around them was compelling."
